As reports from nonprofits swirl about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Central Oregon, Rep. Janelle Bynum is asking them whether it is targeting immigrant communities during moments of crisis or other essential trips, including while individuals seek fire evacuation resources or simply grocery shopping.

The first-term Democratic congresswoman in Oregon’s closest congressional district plans to hold seven in-person and three telephonic town halls over the next three months in a major change from her predecessor, whose lack of meetings inspired constituents to question a cardboard cutout.

A group of first-term House Democrats called on Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to prioritize bringing legislation to the House floor that would lower costs for Americans. Rep. Janelle Bynum (D-Ore.) led 32 Democratic House first-termers in writing the letter, which was exclusively obtained by The Hill.

Her visits this weekend to the Marion County cities of Silverton and Mount Angel are part of what Bynum calls the best part of her job and how she tries to spend most of her time in the district, which crosses the Cascade mountains to include Bend, part of Portland and vast expanses of farmland and mountains in between.

President Trump’s decision to ditch the Department of Education without a thought to what students and parents need is just another short-sighted, chaotic, and effed-up chapter in this administration’s miserable attempt to upset the status quo that doesn’t make meaningful change.
