ICYMI Rep. Bynum on MSNBC, NewsNation, and ABC News: “We Didn’t Ask for This and We Don’t Need This”
Washington, D.C. – ICYMI: Congresswoman Janelle Bynum (OR-05) made the rounds today on MSNBC, NewsNation, and ABC News, calling out President Trump for his deployment of federal troops to Oregon. In addition to the troop deployment in Portland, Rep. Bynum spoke about the approaching potential government shutdown and the shooting at a Michigan church.
On MSNBC, speaking about Trump’s deployment of troops to Portland, she said:
“My reaction is that, you know, I’ve done over 18 town halls and not one time has any Oregonian ever said ‘you know we need to fix up Portland, we need to send troops, we need the President to help us.’ No. They’ve told me every single time ‘we got this.’”
“I mean what he’s trying to do is use our National Guardsmen as toy soldiers and none of them signed up for that. Yesterday we had a town hall just called at a moment's notice. We had over 13,000 people participate and one of the callers said ‘I’m a veteran. I don’t like this. We didn’t sign up for this.’ And they’re telling us over and over again like we don’t know where the President is getting his information from but it’s certainly not true.”
When asked about a federal takeover of Portland on ABC, Rep. Bynum said:
“There will be no federal takeover of Portland, Oregon. … Oregonians are clear about making sure that their Constitutional rights are protected – to free speech and free assembly – and they won’t be intimidated. That said, this idea that Portland is violent? It’s the 72nd ranked city in the country for violent crimes. … So I don’t know where the President is getting his information from, but he’s getting the wrong feed.”
On NewsNation, in reference to a potential shutdown, Rep. Bynum said:
“Republicans run the House, they run the Senate, and they have the Presidency. There is no mistaking that they control this government. You just ran a clip with them showing force. You just have been talking about how they are in so much control. And you mean to tell me they can’t figure out how to pass a budget that is clean, that supports American healthcare, that supports the average working American, and doesn’t give our money to billionaires? You mean to tell me they can’t do that? They own this. Full stop.”
