Military Academy Nominations

The Academy Nomination application is now open for the class of 2031.

The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. For more information, please review the page of Frequently Asked Questions for those seeking a Military Academy Nomination. 

Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

Representative Bynum may nominate ten to fifteen individuals for each vacant academy slot allotted to our district. 

Important Dates:
June 1, 2026 – Nomination Cycle for the Class of 2029 opens with all Academies.
October 31, 2026 – Deadline to submit Nomination packets to Congresswoman Bynum's office (application and supporting
documents)
Early November 2026 – Candidates notified if they received an interview with Congresswoman Bynum's Nomination Board
Late November 2026 – Candidates’ interview with Congresswoman Bynum's Nomination Board
December 2026 – Candidates notified of Congresswoman Bynum's Nomination decisions.
February to May 2027 – Candidates notified by Academies of Appointment decisions from academies.

Academy Information

An appointment to the Service Academies is based on a desire by the candidate to devote a lifetime of military service and implies recognition by the appointee of an obligation to the government to devote himself / herself to a military career.

Please submit a Personal Statement stating why you want to attend a service academy. 

The essay must be 500 words or fewer. There is no preferred format. However, grammar and spelling will be taken into consideration.

Please submit a resume documenting your professional, educational, extracurricular, and leadership experience. There is no specific required format for the resume.

Resumes can NOT be more than 2 pages. The resume can be 1 page as well. Length does not matter as much as quality of content. Grammar and spelling will be taken into consideration.

Letters of recommendation

A minimum of 3 letters is needed. A maximum of 5 is allowed. Letters can NOT be from immediate family.

A specific recommendation form is not required. A letter of recommendation is sufficient.

Some of the people applicants typically seek recommendations from include: teachers, counselors, employers, coaches, faith leaders, scout leaders, ETC.

We prefer that you upload the letters here. If your recommender will not provide you with the letter directly, they can email it to our office. Please have them attach the letter as a PDF and set the email subject to 'Your Full Name- Recommendation Letter'. Our Academy email is OR05academynoms@mail.house.gov. If this is the case, you may upload a document stating the recommender's name, relation to you, and that they will be emailing the letter to our office.
