Congresswoman Bynum Named to Influential Subcommittees to Address Housing Costs, Make Economy More Fair

January 22, 2025

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Janelle Bynum (OR-05) was selected to serve on the House Financial Services’ Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance and Subcommittee on Capital Markets. The Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance oversees the Department of Housing and Urban Development and handles matters related to affordable housing and home insurance. The Subcommittee on Capital Markets reviews issues related to the securities industry and the mortgage industry and oversees the Securities and Exchange Commission and the New York Stock Exchange.

Rep. Bynum’s role will allow her to fight to lower the cost of housing and insurance, strengthen the economy, protect consumers from unfair corporate practices, and more.

“I am ready to leverage my role on these subcommittees to deliver real results for families,” said Rep. Bynum. “I’ll be focused on making housing more affordable, insurance more reliable, and mortgage lending more fair for everyday Oregonians. I’ll also ensure that Washington is putting our interests first, not the interests of those with the most money and influence.”

Background
Earlier this month, Rep. Bynum was named to the powerful House Financial Services Committee, marking the first time that an Oregon freshman has been named to the committee in 28 years. The Committee oversees issues related to the economy, housing, insurance, and the banking system through its oversight of the Federal Reserve, the Treasury, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, among others.
